External plastic doors

When they talk aboutexternal plastic doors, many people immediately imagine something flimsy, for a dacha or something. And this is the main mistake. In fact, this is a whole class of products, where the variation in quality and purpose is like between a carburetor “nine”? and a modern crossover. I myself was prejudiced for a long time, until I had to deal with objects where installing wood or aluminum was simply impractical - for money, for heat, for resistance to our weather. This is where the fun begins.

What is “plastic” actually made of? for the street

The first thing you encounter is confusion in terms. The client asks for a “plastic door”, but simply does not mean a wooden one. But if you dig deeper, for external use a PVC profile is mainly used, and multi-chamber, with reinforcement. Not the one for windows. Here the cross-section is different, the wall thickness, and the steel liner itself is more powerful. I saw samples where the profile was five-chamber, with three sealing contours. But this is already aerobatics, for a private house, and not for a vestibule in the entrance.

Reinforcement is a separate topic. They say “galvanized steel inside?” - and that’s all. But it is important how this liner is located, whether the circuit is closed. Continuous reinforcement along the perimeter of the canvas and frame is the basis of rigidity. Without it, the sash may move over time, especially on wide openings. I remember an incident in one warehouse: they installed doors with thin PVC and weak reinforcement. After six months of operation, with constant visits of loaders, a noticeable distortion appeared and the sash began to rub. I had to redo it. It turned out that they saved on the most important thing - on the frame.

Another nuance is filling. A hollow profile is a disaster for a street door. A normal manufacturer uses either expanded polystyrene inserts or, better yet, mineral wool boards. This directly affects heat and noise insulation. I checked it with a thermal imager: the difference between an empty and a filled profile in cold weather is a few degrees on the inner surface. This is critical to preventing condensation and freezing.

Fittings: where the devil lies

We seem to have sorted out the profile, but the door is a system. And its weak link is often the fittings. Hinges, locks, opening mechanisms. For outdoor plastic doors, lightweight window fittings cannot be installed. You need a special one, designed for greater weight (the canvas with filling is heavier) and for intensive use.

Loops. Anti-burglary hinges with support bearings are a must have. Ordinary ball bearings will quickly become loose under wind load. It is better when there are three of them rather than two, especially for high doors. The castle group is a different story. Multi-locking systems with bolts around the perimeter not only for safety, but also for clamping. This ensures uniform pressure on the seal and there is no blowing. I had experience with doors that had a simple central lock. The corners “breathed” and whistled in the strong wind. After completing the installation with additional crossbars, the problem went away.

Seals. Often they are not given attention, but in vain. EPDM rubber is a good option, resistant to ultraviolet radiation and changes. A cheap foam rubber seal quickly loses its elasticity and crumbles. Changing it is quite a task; you often have to disassemble the entire sash. I advise you to immediately look at this element when choosing.

Editing: theory and harsh reality

You can buy the most expensive and technologically advanced door, but crooked installation will negate all the advantages. The main mistake is improper preparation of the opening. A plastic door frame is not as rigid as a steel one; it cannot be “forced” by fitting it to curved walls. The opening must be leveled and plastered.

Fastening. Anchor plates are preferable to direct anchoring through a profile. The plates allow you to maintain the geometry of the box and compensate for small stresses. The fastening pitch is no more than 600-700 mm. I saw how the ?masters? They were attached only at the corners and in the middle of the sidewalls. The result is predictable: the box moved, the sash stopped closing.

Foaming. There are two key points here. The first is the mandatory use of wedges to fix the box in the opening before the foam hardens. The second is the foam itself. It should be professional, with a low coefficient of secondary expansion. Conventional polyurethane foam, when expanding, can deform the PVC profile. After foaming, it is necessary to protect the seam from moisture and UV radiation - both outside and inside. People often forget about the external finishing of slopes, and then they wonder why the foam collapsed and the cold began to set in.

Where do they really work and where do they not?

Based on experience, external plastic doorsperform well in a number of scenarios. For example, the entrance to a private house with an unheated veranda or terrace. Where good thermal insulation from a cold buffer room is needed. Or a balcony block on the ground floor - light, inexpensive, with good light transmission, if we are talking about options with large glazing.

But for a direct entrance from the street into a heated residential space, I would think three times. Yes, modern systems can be very “warm”, but this raises the question of resistance to mechanical stress and hacking attempts. Plastic, even reinforced plastic, is not steel. For such tasks, there are combined options - for example, a steel door with internal PVC lining, but that’s another story and a different price tag.

Another good segment is commercial and auxiliary premises: warehouses, technical rooms, vestibules in office centers. What is important here is the speed of installation, resistance to moisture, and the absence of the need to regularly paint, like metal. But again, you need to look at the load. For passage with active traffic of people and carts, reinforced options are needed.

By the way, about commercial properties. Sometimes the task arises of making not just a door, but an element that combines functionality and design. Here, of course, plastic often loses in the perception of “solidity”. compared to wood. If we talk about wooden solutions for representative spaces, there are players on the market who focus on this. For example, a companyAnhui Wantai Woodworking Co.,Ltd (https://www.anhuiwantai.ru), which supplies wooden doors to the international market, focusing specifically on aesthetics and practicality for residential and commercial spaces. They have their own niche - classics, natural materials, a different production philosophy. But returning to plastic: for utilitarian tasks, where the balance of price, thermal insulation and durability without unnecessary maintenance is important, it is sometimes irreplaceable.

Price issue and what to look for when choosing

The price range is wild. You can find offers for 15 thousand rubles and for 150. The difference is in the profile, filling, fittings, and the availability of certificates (for example, for heat transfer resistance or burglary resistance).

When choosing, I advise you to literally feel it. Weigh the sash in your hand (conditionally). Light means probably a hollow profile without filling. Inspect the reinforcement - it is often visible in the technological holes for fittings. It should be thick, with an anti-corrosion coating. Check the operation of the fittings - everything should move smoothly, without backlash or squeaks.

Be sure to ask about the warranty and, more importantly, about the availability of customer service. Even the best door may require adjustments after the first winter as the materials settle. If the manufacturer or installer is “one-off”, all the problems will fall on you.

And lastly: don’t bother with the most complex opening or ventilation systems if you don’t need them. Every additional mechanism is a potential point of failure. Decide on your priorities: the main thing is warmth, the main thing is safety, the main thing is durability during active use? Based on this, select the equipment. Sometimes a simple, but well-made door will last longer and be more reliable than one overloaded with bells and whistles, but with a weak basic “skeleton”. That, in fact, is the whole point.
